Homeland of fairy tales
Ogulin homeland of fairy tales
The town of Ogulin originated at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, and it is assumed that it was in 1500, when Bernardin Frankopan issued a document in Modruš marking the borders of the newly built town between Vitunj and Modruš.
In the past, Ogulin was also called Jula’s town, after the girl Đula, who, according to legend, fell into an abyss near Ogulin’s castle due to unrequited love, and a new town soon developed around that fort. Over time, Ogulin developed more and more, despite numerous wars, and in the 19th century it became the seat of the Modruš-Rijeka County. At that time, the most famous inhabitant of that area was born here – Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, after whose ‘Stories from the past’ Ogulin is often called the ‘homeland of fairy tales’.
Today, Ogulin is increasingly turning to tourism, because in addition to sightseeing, you can enjoy fishing, cycling, hiking, skiing and sledding, which is the biggest ‘merit’ of several natural attractions, such as the mountains Klek and Bjelolasica, the river Dobra and Zagorska Mrežnica and Lake Sabljaci.
